How to apply for r370 for the first time

Apply for SRD R370 Grant

The SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed South Africans who do not receive any other form of income or social support. Applying for this grant is free and can be done online from your phone or computer. This guide explains Apply for SRD R370 Grant and  who qualifies, what documents you need, and the different ways you can submit your application.

What You Need Before Applying

  • South African ID number
  • Active mobile phone number
  • Proof of identity document
  • Banking details or alternative payment method choice
  • Proof of residence (recommended but not always mandatory)
  • Internet access or data to apply online

Who Qualifies for a SASSA Grant?

To qualify for the SASSA SRD R370 grant, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Age requirement: You must be between 18 and 59 years old. People younger than 18 or 60 years and older do not qualify for the SRD grant but may be eligible for other SASSA grants like the Child Support Grant or Old Age Pension.

Citizenship and residency: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered with Home Affairs. You must be living in South Africa at the time of application. Foreign nationals on temporary work permits or study visas do not qualify.

Unemployment status: You must be unemployed and not receiving any income from employment. SASSA checks government and employer databases to verify this. If you are working, even part-time or informally, and your employer is registered, your application may be declined.

No other financial support: You must not be receiving:

  • UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) payments
  • Any other SASSA grant (Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, etc.)
  • NSFAS funding or student allowances
  • Government salary or pension
  • Any other regular government support

No income from other sources: You must not have a regular source of income. SASSA may review your bank statements to check for consistent deposits that suggest employment, business income, or financial support from family members.

Means test: While there is no strict income threshold, SASSA uses various databases to assess whether you genuinely need financial assistance. If evidence suggests you have access to income or support, your application may be declined.

Important notes:

  • You do not need to be registered with the Department of Labour to apply
  • You can apply even if you have applied before and were declined, as long as your circumstances have changed
  • Caregivers, students without funding, and people living with family can still apply if they meet all other criteria
  • You must reapply regularly (monthly or as required) to continue receiving the grant

If you do not meet these requirements, your application will be automatically declined. Make sure you qualify before applying to avoid wasting time.

Documents Required For The SRD Application

You do not need to submit physical documents when applying for the SRD R370 grant online. SASSA verifies your information electronically using government databases. However, you should have the following information ready when you apply.

Proof of Identity

Your South African ID number is the most important piece of information for your SRD application. SASSA uses this to verify your identity with the Department of Home Affairs.

What you need:

  • Your 13-digit ID number (found on your green barcoded ID book or smart ID card)
  • Make sure your ID number is correct – even one wrong digit will cause your application to fail

Common problems:

  • ID number not found: This means Home Affairs does not have your details on their system, or there is a mismatch. Visit a Home Affairs office to update your records.
  • ID number already used: Someone else may have applied using your ID number. Contact SASSA immediately to report fraud.
  • Deceased status: If Home Affairs records show you as deceased (due to error), you must visit Home Affairs to correct this before applying.

You do not need to upload a copy of your ID when applying online. SASSA will verify your identity automatically. However, keep your ID document safe in case you need to visit a SASSA office for verification.

Registered Mobile Number

You must provide an active South African mobile phone number when applying. This number is used to send you important updates about your application and payment.

Why your phone number is important:

  • SASSA sends SMS notifications about your application status (approved, declined, pending)
  • You receive payment confirmation messages with details on when and where to collect your money
  • SASSA may send OTP (One-Time PIN) codes for verification
  • You need this number to check your status online

Requirements:

  • The number must be registered in your name or be accessible to you
  • The number must be active (not disconnected or out of service)
  • You must be able to receive SMS messages on this number
  • You can use a prepaid or contract number

What if you do not have a phone?

  • You can use a family member’s number, but make sure they will inform you when messages arrive
  • You can register a new SIM card in your name at any mobile network store (bring your ID)
  • Some community centers or internet cafes may allow you to use their number temporarily, but this is not recommended

Changing your number later: If you change your phone number after applying, you must update it with SASSA immediately. Failure to do so means you will not receive important notifications. You can update your number online, by calling the SASSA call center, or by visiting an office.

Update your number immediately if it changes. See Change Contact Number guide

Banking Details (If You Choose Direct Deposit)

Providing your banking details allows SASSA to pay your grant directly into your bank account. This is the fastest and safest payment method.

What banking information you need:

  • Full name of the bank (e.g., FNB, Standard Bank, Capitec, Absa, Nedbank)
  • Your account number (usually 9 to 11 digits)
  • Account type (savings or cheque/current)
  • Branch code (some banks use a universal branch code)

Important notes:

  • The bank account must be in your name (same name as your ID)
  • The account must be active and not blocked or frozen
  • You cannot use someone else’s account – SASSA will reject the payment
  • If you do not have a bank account, you can still apply and choose an alternative payment method

Alternative payment options if you do not have a bank account:

  • SASSA can pay your grant into a mobile wallet or cash send option
  • You can collect cash at retail stores like Shoprite, Pick n Pay, or Boxer
  • You will choose your preferred payment method during the application process

What if your bank details are incorrect? If you provide the wrong account number or bank name, your payment will fail and be returned to SASSA. You will need to update your banking details and wait for the payment to be reprocessed, which can cause delays.

Proof of Residence

Proof of residence is not always mandatory for SRD R370 applications, but having it ready can be helpful if SASSA requests additional verification.

Accepted proof of residence documents:

  • Recent municipal account (water, electricity, rates) in your name or the name of the person you live with
  • Lease or rental agreement signed by you and the landlord
  • Affidavit from a homeowner confirming you live at their address
  • Letter from a traditional leader or ward councilor confirming your residence
  • Bank statement showing your residential address

When you might need proof of residence:

  • If SASSA cannot verify your address through other databases
  • If you are appealing a declined application
  • If you visit a SASSA office to resolve an issue with your application
  • If SASSA suspects fraud or duplicate applications from the same address

What if you do not have proof of residence? Many SRD applicants live with family or friends and do not have formal proof of residence in their name. This is acceptable. You can still apply without uploading any documents. SASSA will use your ID address or contact you if they need additional information.

If you are homeless or living in informal settlements, you can still apply. Use the address where you receive mail or where you stay most often.

Additional Supporting Documents

In most cases, you do not need to submit extra documents when applying for the SRD R370 grant online. However, in certain situations, SASSA may request additional proof to verify your eligibility.

When additional documents may be needed:

If you were previously employed:

  • A letter from your former employer confirming your employment ended (retrenchment letter, resignation letter)
  • UIF discharge certificate showing you are no longer claiming unemployment benefits
  • Final pay slip showing your last working date

If you are appealing a declined application:

  • Bank statements showing you have no regular income (last 3 months)
  • Affidavit signed at a police station or commissioner of oaths confirming you are unemployed
  • Any evidence that proves the decline reason was incorrect

If you are a student:

  • Proof that you are not receiving NSFAS funding (NSFAS statement or rejection letter)
  • Confirmation from your institution that you are self-funded or not receiving financial aid

If you live with someone else:

  • Affidavit from the homeowner or main tenant confirming you live with them
  • Copy of the homeowner’s ID

How to submit additional documents:

  • You cannot upload documents during the online application process
  • If SASSA requests documents, they will contact you via SMS or email
  • You may need to email documents to SASSA or take them to an office in person
  • Keep copies of all documents you submit for your records

Most applicants do not need to worry about additional documents unless SASSA specifically asks for them.

What Happens After You Apply?

Once you submit your SRD R370 grant application, SASSA begins processing and verifying your information. Here is what you can expect.

Step 1: Application received Immediately after submitting, you will receive a confirmation message (SMS or on-screen) with your application reference number. Keep this number safe – you will need it to check your status.

Step 2: Verification process SASSA verifies your details with several government departments and databases:

  • Home Affairs: Confirms your ID is valid and you are alive
  • UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund): Checks if you are receiving unemployment benefits
  • SARS (South African Revenue Service): Reviews your tax records to see if you have declared income
  • Department of Labour: Checks if you are registered as employed
  • Banking institutions: May review your bank account activity for regular income deposits
  • Other SASSA systems: Checks if you are receiving any other social grant

This verification process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on how busy the system is and whether there are any issues with your information.

Step 3: Application status update Once SASSA completes the verification, your application status will be updated to one of the following:

Approved: Your application has passed all checks, and you qualify for the grant. You will receive payment once it is processed.

Pending: SASSA is still verifying your information or waiting for confirmation from another department. This can take time – be patient and check your status regularly.

Declined: Your application did not meet the eligibility criteria. You will receive an SMS explaining the reason (e.g., “You are employed” or “You receive UIF”). If you believe the decline is incorrect, you can appeal.

Step 4: Payment processing If approved, SASSA will process your payment. Depending on your chosen payment method:

  • Bank deposit: Money will be transferred to your account (can take 2 to 5 working days after approval)
  • Cash collection: You will receive an SMS with details on where and when to collect your money (usually at Shoprite, Pick n Pay, or Boxer stores)

Step 5: Ongoing requirements The SRD R370 grant is not permanent. You may need to reapply monthly or every few months to continue receiving the grant. SASSA will inform you when you need to reapply.

How to check your status:

  1. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Click “Check Status”
  3. Enter your ID number and registered phone number
  4. Your current status will be displayed

You can check your status as often as you like. It is a good idea to check every few days after applying to see if there are any updates.

  • If you are declined and believe it is a mistake, submit an appeal within 90 days
  • If you do not receive payment after approval, check your banking details and contact SASSA
